Established in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level extension is the only one intended for personal sites only. These domains can include personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are known by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you planned to secure john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed 3rd-level names remained running.
